The Eurasian moorhen, or common moorhen, is a rail found across many parts of Africa, Europe and Asia. It lives around well-vegetated marshes, ponds, canals and other wetlands, and is generally one of the most common Old World rails. It is absent from the polar regions and many tropical rainforests (Wikipedia, general species account).

The New World common gallinule and the Tristan and Gough moorhens were once treated as the same species but are now split because of genetic, bill-shield and vocal differences (Wikipedia, general species account).
