The stork-billed kingfisher is a large tree kingfisher with a heavy bill, widely but sparsely distributed in the tropical Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, from India to Indonesia. The head is brown with a paler chin, and the sexes look alike. It is found mostly by streams and ponds in lowland areas with tree cover and is sedentary throughout its range. Thirteen subspecies are recognised, and the species name refers to the Cape of Good Hope although the type specimen is now known to have come from near Chandannagar in West Bengal (Wikipedia, general species account).
