The white-rumped munia, or white-rumped mannikin, is a small waxbill finch, not a close relative of the true finches or sparrows. It is native to tropical continental Asia and some adjacent islands and has become naturalised in parts of Japan. Its domesticated descendant is the society or Bengalese finch, kept worldwide as a pet and lab organism. Six subspecies are recognised (Wikipedia, general species account).
