The Sumatran rhinoceros, also called the hairy rhinoceros or Asian two-horned rhinoceros, is a rare member of the rhinoceros family and the only extant species of the genus Dicerorhinus. It is the smallest rhinoceros: it stands 112–145 cm at the shoulder, with a head and body of 2.36–3.18 m and a tail of 35–70 cm, and weighs 500–1,000 kg. It has two horns, the larger nasal horn typically 15–25 cm and the posterior horn usually a stub under 10 cm, both dark grey or black. A coat of reddish-brown hair covers most of the body (Wikipedia, general species account).

The species once inhabited rainforests, swamps and cloud forests across a much wider area of South and Southeast Asia, and is now one of the rarest large mammals, with the account used here describing a small and fragmented remnant (Wikipedia, general species account).
