Breeds across the subarctic Palearctic and northern Europe; winters in Africa and South and Southeast Asia
The Eurasian whimbrel is one of the most widespread curlews, breeding across much of the subarctic Palearctic and Europe as far south as Scotland. The name imitates its call. Five subspecies are recognised, and the nominate form breeds from Norway to north-central Siberia and winters in Africa and South and Southeast Asia. It was split from the Hudsonian whimbrel in 2019, though some authorities still treat them as one species (Wikipedia, general species account).
