The great knot is a medium-sized wader and one of the largest in its genus, 26 to 30 cm long with a wingspan of 56 to 66 cm. It breeds on the tundra of north-east Siberia, nesting on the ground and laying about four eggs in a scrape, and is strongly migratory, wintering on coasts from southern Asia to Australia. It forms enormous flocks in winter. Its closest relative is the surfbird (Wikipedia, general species account).
