Size

16–18.5cm

Wilson's storm petrel is a small seabird with a circumpolar distribution, mainly in the seas of the southern hemisphere but extending northwards in the northern summer. It is 16 to 18.5 cm long, and one of the most abundant bird species in the world. The name commemorates the Scottish-American ornithologist Alexander Wilson (Wikipedia, general species account).

Two or three subspecies are recognised. The old name Mother Carey's chicken was used for several petrels, and the idea that they foretold storms gave the group its name (Wikipedia, general species account).
