The broad-billed sandpiper is a small wader, 16 to 18 cm long, slightly smaller than a dunlin but larger than a little stint. Its bill is longer and straighter than a dunlin's, with the tip distinctly kinked down, and its legs are shorter. Breeding adults have dark brown upperparts with narrow pale fringes, white underparts with blackish breast markings, a pale crown stripe and a distinctive split eyebrow (Wikipedia, general species account).
Two subspecies are recognised: falcinellus breeds in northern Scandinavia and north-west Russia and winters in East Africa, the Middle East and India, while sibirica breeds in Siberia and winters in Southeast Asia (Wikipedia, general species account).
